Riordan in PJO: While Camp Half-Blood can be a bit hectic at times there has always been an equal balance between fun and work. It’s both a safe haven and a training center. The Campers are given the freedom to be what they are - kids and demigods. They’re given the possibility to joke and laugh and mess around but they are also trained vigorously in every aspect we can prepare them for. We try to make sure they are well rounded by making sure they do a variety of training activities in an orderly schedule. So while the Campers are very cheerful and mischievous, they know when the time is to step down and be serious. They are well-trained, highly intelligent, warriors that can readily listen to commands in one structured and simultaneous action. Just because they have fun does not mean they are incapable warriors but, in fact, are quite the opposite. Never underestimate Camp Half-Blood.
Riordan in BOO: The Greek Demigods have the brain capacity of monkeys. There is no structure, no planning, no training, no learning. Their survival and fighting skill relies on pure luck and instinct. They literally are so crazy and disobedient it’s amazing they have survived this long. The Titan War? They strategically placed only two hundred campers to cover all pathways to the Empire State Building and efficiently fought and beat Kronos’s army of thousands? What? No. That is far beyond the Greeks’ capabilities. What a crazy notion. The only way they have made it this far is because of a good streak of flukes.
